The most iconic climb in Krabi — and one of the toughest quarter-hours of stairs in Thailand. From the temple grounds of Wat Tham Suea, a single concrete staircase of 1,237 steps rises almost straight up a limestone tower, gaining roughly 278 m to a summit crowned by a golden Buddha. At the top: a full 360° panorama over Krabi's karst plain, the mangroves and, on a clear morning, the Andaman coast. It is short but brutal — count 30 to 50 minutes up, taking breaks on the steepest flights. Free to climb; it is an active temple, so cover shoulders and knees.

Temple grounds
The climb starts behind the main hall of Wat Tham Suea, past the caves and the resident macaques. Fill up on water here — there is nothing on the way up.

The steep flights
The staircase pitches up fast, with the steepest steps early on. Handrails run the whole way; rest on the small landings and let faster climbers pass.

The macaque zone
Halfway up, cheeky long-tailed macaques patrol the rails. Keep water and snacks zipped away — they will grab anything loose.

The summit Buddha
The last flights open onto the summit platform: a large golden Buddha, prayer bells and a 360° view over the karst plain. Sunrise here is unforgettable.
