This is the hike that shows the island's other face: leave the buzz of Tonsai on the northern ridge trail, drop down to Ao Loh Bakao — the village where Phi Phi's fishing families actually live, far from the bars and shops — then skirt the mangroves before landing on 800 metres of quiet beach lined with long-tails. 3.7 km of real local life, greenery and calm: the perfect counterpoint to the island's south.

Stage by stage

  1. 1

    Tonsai → the turn-off

Leave the village northward along Loh Dalum, then climb gently on the concrete path. At the "Nui Beach" fork, keep straight on north — the Nui Bay trail branches left.

  2. 2

    The northern ridge

The path follows the island's spine through the vegetation, with glimpses of both coasts. It's the easiest-rolling stretch of the route — you make good progress, shaded in sections.

  3. 3

Phi Phi village (Ao Loh Bakao)

The descent lands in the local village: simple houses, a mosque, chickens and fishing nets. This is where much of the island's population lives — smile, say hello, and dress respectfully passing through.

  4. 4

    The mangroves

Between the village and the beach, the trail skirts the mangrove flat — mangrove trees, fiddler crabs and wading birds at low tide. The best nature-photo spot of the route.

  5. 5

    Loh Bakao beach

800 metres of sand fringed with coconut palms, a few long-tails, one or two discreet resorts and hardly anyone. Calm swimming, a superb sunset — and a taxi-boat home.

🎒 What to bring

  • Cover shoulders and knees through the village (Muslim community)
  • 1.5 L of water per person — only a couple of small shops in the village
  • Low tide = a living mangrove: crabs and birds on show
  • Taxi-boat back to Tonsai: 200-400 THB, ask on the beach or at the resorts

⚠️ Safety

  • !The ridge section is sun-exposed between 11am and 3pm: hat and sunscreen
  • !Stay on the trail through the mangroves — deep mud off-path
  • !Last taxi-boat leaves late afternoon: don't walk back after dark
