Maya Bay Tour 2026: How to Visit Before the Crowds

Maya Bay is the crescent of white sand on Koh Phi Phi Leh that the film The Beach made famous — sheer limestone cliffs wrapping a lagoon of impossibly clear water in the heart of Thailand's Andaman Sea. After a four-year closure to let the reef recover, the bay reopened in 2022 under strict national-park rules: capped numbers, no boats anchoring in the bay, and no swimming off the beach itself. That makes how and when you go matter more than ever. We live on Koh Phi Phi and run our own boats, so we leave before the day-trip fleet arrives from Phuket and Krabi — which is the single biggest difference between a crowded photo and having that beach almost to yourself.

Why Maya Bay Is Worth It

Few beaches on Earth are this photogenic: a shallow turquoise bowl ringed by 100-metre karst walls, powder sand, and reef flats where blacktip reef sharks cruise the shallows at first light. The 2018–2022 closure worked — corals were replanted, the sharks returned, and the bay today is healthier than it has been in a generation. Visiting now means seeing it under active protection rather than the free-for-all of the old days. Pair it with the neighbouring Pileh Lagoon, Loh Samah Bay, Viking Cave and Monkey Beach and a single morning delivers the most iconic scenery in southern Thailand. The catch is timing and access — get those right and Maya Bay lives up to the postcard; get them wrong and you share the sand with a thousand people.

How to Get to Maya Bay

Maya Bay has no accommodation and no pier of its own — every visit is by boat as a day trip or half-day tour. Where you start decides how early you can beat the crowds.

  • From Koh Phi Phi (best)

Staying on Phi Phi Don is the winning move. It is 20–30 minutes by long-tail or speedboat, so island-based tours reach the bay at sunrise — an hour or more before the Phuket and Krabi fleets. Our own sunrise departures are built around exactly this window.

  • From Phuket

Around 45–60 minutes each way by speedboat from Rassada or Royal Phuket Marina. Day trips leave mid-morning and arrive when the bay is busiest, so choose an operator that runs the wider Phi Phi loop and hits Maya Bay early or late in the rotation.

  • From Krabi / Ao Nang

Roughly 45 minutes by speedboat. Similar timing to Phuket day trips — great scenery on the way, but you arrive during peak hours unless the itinerary is sequenced to visit Maya Bay first.

  • From Koh Lanta

About 60–90 minutes by speedboat, usually combined with a full Phi Phi island-hopping day. A long but rewarding run when the sea is calm in high season.

Best Time to Visit Maya Bay

The bay is open roughly October through July and closes every year from 1 August to 30 September so the reef and beach can recover during monsoon swell. High season (November to April) brings calm seas, clear water and reliable daily access — February to April are the driest, glassiest months. May to July still runs but weather is more variable. Whatever the season, the decisive factor is the hour, not the month: the beach is quietest in the first 60–90 minutes after opening and again in the last light of the afternoon. A sunrise tour from the island is the only way to stand on that sand with almost no one else on it. Midday, expect the full rotation of day-trip boats and capacity crowds.

What to Bring & Know

Bring reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen is discouraged inside the park), water shoes or sandals for the boardwalk, a dry bag for your phone, and cash in Thai baht for the park fee. There are basic toilets near the boardwalk but no shops or restaurants on Phi Phi Leh, so carry your own water and snacks. Mornings are cooler and the light is best for photos before 09:00. If you get seasick, a larger speedboat rides more comfortably than a long-tail on an open crossing. And book ahead in high season — capacity caps mean the best early slots sell out, especially for sunrise departures.

Maya Bay Rules & Entry Fee

Maya Bay sits inside Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park and the rules are enforced. Know them before you go — they shape every tour.

National Park fee
400 THB per adult, 200 THB per child, paid on arrival and almost never included in the tour price. Ours is quoted separately so there are no surprises at the pier.
No boats in the bay
Boats no longer enter or anchor in Maya Bay. Everyone docks at a floating pier in Loh Samah Bay behind the cliffs and walks a short boardwalk through to the beach.
No swimming off the beach
Swimming from Maya Beach itself is banned to protect the reef and the resident blacktip reef sharks. You can wade at the shoreline and swim elsewhere on the tour, but the bay is for walking and photos.
Capacity & time limits
Numbers on the beach are capped and slots are rotated, so visits run roughly an hour. Early arrivals get the calmest, emptiest window before the caps fill.
Seasonal closure
Closed annually 1 August – 30 September. If you travel in those months we route you to equally stunning spots — Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island and the Phi Phi Leh cliffs — and tell you honestly that Maya Beach itself is shut.

Maya Bay: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Maya Bay open in 2026?
Yes. Maya Bay is open to visitors, having reopened in 2022 after its recovery closure. It still closes every year from 1 August to 30 September for seasonal reef and beach recovery, so plan around those two months.
How much does it cost to visit Maya Bay?
The Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park fee is 400 THB per adult and 200 THB per child, paid on arrival and usually not included in the tour price. On top of that you pay for the boat tour itself, which varies by departure point, boat type and whether it's shared or private.
Can you swim at Maya Bay?
Not from Maya Beach itself — swimming there is banned to protect the reef and the blacktip reef sharks that live in the shallows. You can wade at the water's edge for photos, and most tours include swimming and snorkelling stops elsewhere around Phi Phi Leh, such as Pileh Lagoon and Loh Samah Bay.
What is the best time to visit Maya Bay to avoid crowds?
Go at sunrise. The beach is quietest in the first 60–90 minutes after it opens, before the day-trip fleet arrives from Phuket and Krabi. Because we're based on Koh Phi Phi, our sunrise tours reach the bay first. Midday is by far the most crowded.
How do you get to Maya Bay?
Only by boat, as a day trip or half-day tour. It's 20–30 minutes from Koh Phi Phi, around 45–60 minutes by speedboat from Phuket, roughly 45 minutes from Krabi/Ao Nang, and 60–90 minutes from Koh Lanta. There's no accommodation on Phi Phi Leh, so you can't stay overnight.
Why can't boats enter Maya Bay anymore?
To protect the recovering reef, boats no longer enter or anchor in the bay. Tours dock at a floating pier in Loh Samah Bay behind the cliffs, and visitors walk a short boardwalk through to Maya Beach.
Is Maya Bay worth visiting?
Yes — it's one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand and the reef has genuinely recovered under the new rules. The experience is far better early in the morning; visit at sunrise and it lives up to the postcard, visit at midday and it can feel crowded.
Can I book a private Maya Bay tour?
Yes. We run private long-tail and speedboat charters that let you set your own pace, reach Maya Bay early and combine it with quieter spots. As an on-island operator we confirm on WhatsApp and there's no middleman — just tell us your dates and group size.
