About Koh Yao

Set in the heart of Phang Nga Bay, between Phuket and Krabi, Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi are one of the last authentic refuges of southern Thailand. No high-rises, no crowded streets here: rubber plantations, Muslim fishing villages, rice paddies and long, near-empty beaches. It's island Thailand as it was thirty years ago — a striking contrast with the buzz of Phuket, just 30 minutes away by boat.

When to visit Koh Yao

The best window runs from November to April: calm seas, clear skies and clear water, ideal for fishing and kayaking. From May to October (green season), showers are more frequent but short, the island is even greener and quieter, and rates are softer. Phang Nga Bay stays sheltered year-round, so boat trips are possible even when the sea is rough elsewhere.

How to get to Koh Yao

Koh Yao is easily reached by boat. From Phuket, long-tails and speedboats leave from Bang Rong pier (northeast of the island) in 30 to 45 minutes. From Krabi, boats depart from Ao Nang or Thalane. There is no airport on Koh Yao: combine a flight to Phuket or Krabi, then a boat transfer. We arrange pickup and transfers from your hotel.

Where to stay in Koh Yao

Koh Yao Yai (the larger) and Koh Yao Noi (the more tourism-developed) offer everything from simple eco-lodges to charming bay-front resorts. Koh Yao Noi has most of the accommodation and restaurants; Koh Yao Yai is wilder and quieter. Either way, you come here for the calm, not the nightlife.

Koh Yao — frequently asked questions

Who is Koh Yao for?
For those seeking calm and authenticity: couples, families, travellers tired of the Phuket crowds. It's not a party destination, but a place to disconnect.
How long from Phuket?
30 to 45 minutes by boat from Bang Rong pier, plus the road transfer to the pier. You can make a day-trip return for an excursion.
Can you visit Koh Yao for the day?
Yes, a day trip (fishing, kayaking, beaches) is entirely possible from Phuket or Krabi. But to truly taste the island's pace, one or two nights are well worth it.
Are there any local customs to respect?
Koh Yao is largely Muslim and traditional: dress modestly away from the beach, be discreet with alcohol in public. That's also what keeps the island so unspoiled.
