About Krabi

Krabi province is Thailand's limestone heart. Dramatic cliff faces jut from turquoise water, secluded lagoons hide between karst formations, and some of Asia's best rock climbing routes run along Railay Beach. As a Phi Phi-based operator, we know Krabi intimately—it's our neighbour across the Andaman Sea, reachable in 45 minutes by speedboat or a scenic 2-hour journey by longtail. Krabi attracts serious climbers, beach lovers, and adventure seekers who want to escape crowds without losing creature comforts. Ao Nang is the main hub, packed with resorts and restaurants; Railay Beach (accessible only by boat) offers a wilder vibe; and the Hong Islands deliver pristine snorkeling in protected waters. Unlike Phuket's sprawl or Koh Samui's party scene, Krabi rewards slow exploration. You'll share the 4 Islands tour with other travellers, but spend mornings alone on hidden beaches and afternoons kayaking through mangroves where hornbills call overhead.

When to visit Krabi

Krabi's dry season runs November to April—calm seas, clear skies, and perfect beach days. December and January are peak but crowded; February and March offer the sweetest spot between weather and fewer visitors. April gets hot (35°C+) but rains are rare. May to October is monsoon season: frequent showers, rougher waters, and some tour operators reduce schedules, but prices drop 30–50% and lush green returns to the cliffs. Rock climbing is best November to March when humidity is low. Snorkeling works year-round, though visibility peaks in dry season.

Top tours & excursions from Krabi

Krabi's signature experiences blend water, limestone, and adrenaline. Whether you're paddling through emerald lagoons or clipping bolts 300 metres above the sea, every tour reveals the province's raw beauty.

4 Islands Tour (Poda, Chicken Island, Tup, Phra Nang Cave)

The classic Krabi experience. Speedboat loops Phra Nang Cave (watch the sunset light the stalactites), Chicken Island's iconic limestone needle, and Poda's limestone arch. Snorkel in gin-clear water, swim in hidden lagoons. Typically 900–1500 THB including lunch & guide.

    Hong Islands Snorkeling & Kayaking

Paddle through mangrove channels to emerald lagoons ringed by limestone. Snorkel coral gardens teeming with parrotfish and grouper. Quieter and less crowded than Phi Phi, with pristine water. Day trip or overnight island camps available.

    Railay Beach Rock Climbing

350+ bolted routes on world-class limestone. Routes suit all grades from beginner slopers to 5.13 projects. Experienced guides set anchors and teach technique on protected faces. Multi-pitch climbing with sea views. Dehydrating but unforgettable.

Phi Phi Day Trip from Ao Nang

Speedboat from Ao Nang to Phi Phi Leh's Maya Bay and Monkey Beach, then Phi Phi Don village. Snorkel, hike, and browse the pier markets. More affordable than staying on Phi Phi; return to Krabi's quiet for dinner.

    Deep-Water Soloing (DWS) at Railay

Climb without ropes above deep water—slip and splash, not crash. Guides identify safe routes and teach movement on wet rock. Combines climbing skill, swimming, and a dose of fear-management. Popular with fit swimmers aged 16+.

    Mangrove Kayaking & Wildlife

Paddle narrow channels through flooded mangrove forest watching for monkeys, kingfishers, and monitor lizards. Guides share ecology lessons. Combine with island lunch or Tiger Cave Temple. Half-day or full-day options.

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Seua) & Krabi Town Culture

Hike 1272 steps to a hilltop monastery with views across rice fields and limestone peaks. Monks teach meditation basics. Explore Krabi Town's wet market, street food, and riverside temples. Best early morning to avoid heat.

    Sunset Longtail & Lagoon Tour

Private or shared longtail explores hidden lagoons, small beaches, and fishing villages at golden hour. Stop to snorkel warm, shallow water. Watch the sun sink behind limestone cliffs. Romantic and peaceful.

    Rock Climbing Multi-Day Expedition

Combine Railay climbing (days 1–2) with Ao Nang beach and mangrove kayaking (day 3). Sleep on Railay, climb morning and afternoon routes, and end with a relaxed island paddle. Suits intermediate climbers wanting immersion.

How to get to Krabi

Most travellers fly into Krabi International Airport (HKT code, though sometimes listed as Phuket). Direct flights connect Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and other Thai cities; expect 1.5 to 2.5 hours from Bangkok. From the airport, taxis, ride-hailing, or minivans reach Ao Nang (45–60 km, 1–1.5 hours) for about 800–1500 THB. Alternatively, fly into Phuket and drive 2 hours south to Krabi. If you're coming from Phi Phi (as our guests often do), speedboats depart Phi Phi Don three times daily in high season; the 45-minute journey costs 500–600 THB. Trains serve Krabi's station, but buses from Bangkok are slower than flying.

Where to stay in Krabi

Ao Nang is Krabi's busy hub: resorts, seafood restaurants, and dive shops line the beach and street. Best for families wanting convenience; walkable evening food scene. Railay Beach (boat-only access, 10 minutes from Ao Nang) feels remote: rock climbers' mecca, backpacker bungalows, and upscale cliffside resorts. No vehicles; no night noise. Hong Islands suit island hoppers and divers seeking solitude. Krabi Town (30 km inland) offers budget beds and local culture but lacks beach appeal. For a balanced stay, base yourself in Ao Nang and day-trip Railay, Hong Islands, or the 4 Islands tour.

Krabi tours — frequently asked questions

Is Krabi or Phi Phi better for my holiday?
Both shine differently. Phi Phi feels party-focused, quieter Krabi rewards explorers. Railay draws climbers; Ao Nang suits families. Many guests do both: 3 days Phi Phi island-hopping, then 3 days Krabi climbing or diving. We run ferries between them daily.
Can I climb at Railay if I'm a beginner?
Yes. Instructors teach rope management and technique on bolted routes graded 5.1–5.6. No experience needed. Physical fitness helps; bring water and sun protection. Multi-pitch (requiring rappel) requires prior multi-pitch experience or training.
What's included in the 4 Islands tour?
Boat transport, guide, life jacket, snorkel gear, lunch (usually Thai curry and fruit), and entrance fees. Times vary 8:30 am–5 pm depending on operator. Depart from Ao Nang pier. Sunscreen and underwater camera recommended.
Is Railay Beach accessible by car?
No vehicles reach Railay. Longtails depart Ao Nang Pier every 10–15 minutes (10 min journey, ~60 THB per person). Pack light; porters charge extra for large bags. Kayaks and climbing gear stay with guides.
When is the best time to snorkel in Krabi?
November to April brings calm water, excellent visibility (25+ metres), and comfortable temperatures. May to October monsoons roughen seas; some snorkel tours pause, but prices drop and coral spawning creates underwater spectacles. Avoid typhoon months (July–October peak storms).
Do I need a climbing certificate or prior experience?
Not for guided single-pitch routes at Railay. Trained guides assess your fitness and set appropriate routes. For multi-pitch or leading, prior experience or professional training is essential for safety.
