Two sites, one day

Emerald Pool and Hot Springs are 15 minutes' drive from each other, in the same national park. Most travelers do both on the same day — morning in the cool water of Emerald Pool, afternoon in the warm water of the springs. The reverse order also works.

Why privatize

This is the excursion where taking a private driver makes a huge difference.

  • Shared tours pick people up in Ao Nang between 8:30-9:30am, then all arrive at the same time at 10:30-11:00am. At this time, Emerald Pool is full (sometimes 200 people in a 15 m diameter pool).
  • Privately, we leave at 8:00 a.m. and arrive at 9:30 a.m. — first to the water, photos without crowds, and we go back to eat before the buses arrive.

Our advice for the season

  • November to April (dry): guaranteed turquoise blue, shaded forest, maximum comfort.
  • May to October (humid): more variable color, slippery ground, but also lusher jungle and fewer people. The hot springs remain accessible all year round.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit + light t-shirt (the sun is beating down at the Emerald Pool)
  • Water shoes or closed sandals (jungle trail)
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Waterproof camera (clear water is spectacular)
  • A little cash for lunch (+ massage 300-500 THB if you want to try it)

Our tip: The traditional Thai massage offered at the hot springs is surprisingly good — the masseuses have been working there for years. 300 THB for 30 minutes is the best value for money in the region.

Before you go

Good to know

  • Prone to seasickness?

Take a tablet ~30 min before departure, sit mid-boat, keep your eyes on the horizon and avoid heading out on an empty stomach.

  • Beat the crowds

Iconic spots like Maya Bay are far calmer early in the day. Our morning departures get you there before the midday ferry rush.

  • National park fees

Some sites sit inside a national park, so an entrance fee may apply. Check the “Not included” list above so there are no surprises.

  • Sun & reef care

The tropical sun is strong — bring a hat, sunglasses and plenty of water. Reef-safe sunscreen is required in Thai marine parks.

  • What to pack

Swimwear under your clothes, a towel, a dry bag for your phone, and a change of clothes for the trip back.

Frequently asked

Shared tours all arrive at 10:30 a.m. — Emerald Pool gets crowded and the water gets murky. With a private driver you arrive at 9:30 a.m. and you have 45 minutes in an almost empty swimming pool.
