Nui Bay

The secret northern cove, at the end of the big crossing

Challenging

Nui Bay is the hiker's reward: a white-sand cove pinched between two limestone spurs, reachable only on foot or by long-tail. The route crosses the island south to north — 4.1 km over the ridge, through the northern hamlets and across Loh Lana beach — before a final passage that only opens at low tide. It's the longest of our hikes: leave early, time the tide, and you'll likely have the beach to yourself.

Stage by stage

  1. 1

    Tonsai → the turn-off

Leave the village heading north along Loh Dalum, then climb gently on the concrete path hugging the hill. At the signed "Nui Beach" fork, a small sign points left between two houses.

  2. 2

    The ridge

The trail rises through the vegetation to a panoramic shoulder — the Andaman Sea appears on both sides of the island at once. The most sun-exposed stretch: hat mandatory.

  3. 3

    Down to Loh Lana

The path drops to the northwest coast and lands on Loh Lana Bay, calm and rarely visited. You walk straight across the sand to cross the bay.

  4. 4

    The tide passage

At the end of Loh Lana, the passage to Nui Beach rounds the rocks: it's only walkable at low tide. If the water touches the cliff, don't push it — wait or turn back.

  5. 5

    Nui Beach

The cove: white sand, turquoise water, a reef a few strokes out for snorkeling. No bar, no loungers — pack everything in, pack everything out.

🎒 What to bring

  • Check the low-tide time before leaving — the final passage depends on it
  • 2 L of water per person: the longest, most exposed hike
  • Mask and snorkel: the cove's reef is worth it
  • No shops after the northern village: bring a snack

⚠️ Safety

  • !The final passage is impassable at high tide: don't try to swim around the rocks
  • !The ridge section is brutally hot between 11am and 3pm
  • !Tell your hotel where you're heading if hiking alone
