The atmosphere of Tonsai after dark
As soon as the sun goes down, Tonsai lights up. Restaurants put out their tables, bars turn on the neon lights and speakers. You go from a busy alley to a quiet beach in a two-minute walk. Everything is small, dense and can be discovered on foot, without a complicated plan.
An island without cars, a real luxury in the evening
Koh Phi Phi has no cars or roads. You can only access the island by ferry or speedboat, then walk. In the evening, it makes everything quieter: no engine noise, no traffic danger. You return peacefully to your stay, feet in the sand or in the lit streets.
The bars with your feet in the sand of Loh Dalum
Loh Dalum Bay is home to beach bars. You sit on a rug, a coffee table, sometimes directly on the sand facing the sea. The famous Thai “buckets” flow freely: be careful, they are much stronger than they seem. We advise you to take it slowly and keep water within reach.
Fire shows, the highlight of the evening
On Loh Dalum, jugglers string together flaming sticks and burning skipping ropes. Watching these shows is free: you only pay for your drinks at the bar. It's spectacular, especially with your feet in the sand, with the music blasting. A piece of advice from islanders: never try the flaming jump rope after a few drinks, burns are really common.
What to really expect
Let's be honest with you. Tonsai in the evening is festive, joyful and sometimes noisy until late at night. The music changes from one bar to another: electro, reggae, pop, house. Bring sturdy flip-flops, a little change for your drinks and a relaxed state of mind.
Calm also exists
Phi Phi is not just a party island. Walk away from Loh Dalum and you find laid-back bars, deckchairs and quiet cocktails facing the sea. The sound of the waves replaces the bass, and it's just as beautiful. Our favorite: end with a long-tail ride at sunset before heading to the bars.

Tonsai in the evening especially appeals to young travelers, groups of friends and backpackers. Do you like dancing with your feet in the sand? You'll love the energy of Loh Dalum. Are you looking for absolute calm? Choose a stay a little out of the way, towards Long Beach or the heights, and enjoy a short evening.
Combine the party and the next day's excursions
One last tip from the locals. The best outings leave early in the morning, before the crowds arrive. To see Maya Bay almost empty, leaving at sunrise is unbeatable. If you plan to take advantage of it, keep a reasonable evening the day before: party one evening, nature the next day, it's the right balance.
