Why a French-speaking guide in Koh Phi Phi changes everything
Koh Phi Phi receives ~1 million visitors per year. The majority go through large English-speaking operators: shared tours of 30-40 people, organized bus departures, broken English, identical photos for everyone, and you come away with the impression of having seen the island through a loudspeaker.
Our team has lived on Koh Phi Phi since 2018. A native French speaker, she has two private longtails, knows the captains by first name, knows what time Maya Bay becomes a floating parking lot and what time it becomes an empty lagoon again. When you book with us, you book directly with people who live on the island, in French, without an intermediary and therefore at no additional cost.

This guide is a summary of everything we advise our French-speaking clients before they arrive. If you're planning a trip to Phi Phi in 2026, read the whole thing — you'll save time, money, and you'll see things that 99% of tourists miss.

When to come: true seasonality
All destinations in Thailand have a "dry season" and a "rainy season", but in Phi Phi the nuances matter:

| Period | Weather report | Crowd | Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December - February | Dry, 28-30°C, calm sea | 🔴 Very high season | +30-50% | Ideal but expensive, book early |
| March - mid-April | Very hot, still dry | 🟠 Songkran mid-April | Standard | Excellent compromise |
| Mid-April - May | Warm, first short thunderstorms | 🟢 Calm | -10-20% | Our favorite period |
| June - August | Active monsoon, showers | 🟢 Very calm | -30% | Possible but variable |
| September - October | Monsoon at peak | 🟢 The calmest | -40% | Risky, some excursions canceled |
| November | End of monsoon, sea calms down | 🟠 Resumption | -10% | Trap month: it depends on the years |

How to get to Koh Phi Phi
No airport on the island. You arrive by ferry from one of these 3 points:
From Phuket (most common)
Ferries Phi Phi Cruiser or Royal Jet 9am and 1:30pm from Rassada Pier. Duration 1h45-2h. Price ~700 THB. Tickets can be purchased in the morning at the port or online.
From Krabi (Ao Nang or Krabi Town)
Direct ferry 1h30 from Klong Jirad Pier. Departures 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in high season. Price ~600 THB. Much fewer tourists than Phuket.

From Koh Lanta
Seasonal ferry (November to April only) 1h30. Useful if you chain several islands together.
From Bangkok
No direct ferry. Flight Bangkok-Phuket (1h, ~50-80€), then ferry. Allow a full day of transit. See Bangkok → Koh Phi Phi: complete guide.

⚠️ Our advice: NEVER arrive at Phi Phi after 5 p.m. Disembarkation at Tonsai Pier at night is chaotic, the longtail transfers to the northern hotels (Laem Tong) no longer work.

How many days to stay?
Short answer: 3 nights minimum. Anything less, you're missing the point. Plus, you benefit.
- 2 nights: you see Tonsai + 1 excursion. You miss Phi Phi Leh thoroughly, Bamboo Island, diving.
- 3 nights: the sweet spot. Day 1 arrival + Tonsai, day 2 full-day Phi Phi Leh excursion, day 3 sunset + plankton, day 4 return ferry.
- 5-7 nights: the island life version. Diving, viewpoint hikes, Phi Phi Don north, rest.

Where to sleep: the 3 areas to know
Phi Phi Don has a unique geography: it is butterfly-shaped, two mountains connected by a narrow isthmus (Tonsai Village). Your choice of zone changes everything.

Tonsai (the central isthmus)
Life, noise, shops. Bars, restaurants, agencies, longtails at the foot. Major downside: the beach bars on Loh Dalum play loudly until 2am. Ideal solo/backpacker, not recommended for families.

Loh Dalum (North Tonsai Bay)
Main beach, fine sand, calm swimming. Mid-range hotels, lots of families. Still impacted by noise from bars in season.

Laem Tong / Loh Bagao (northeast of the island)
4-5 star resorts, private beach, absolute silence. Accessible only by longtail (15-20 min from Tonsai). Ideal honeymoon couple, premium. Downside: you have to move for most excursions.

Excursions that are really worth it
Phi Phi literally offers 50+ different excursions. Most of it is commercial filler. Here are the ones we personally recommend:
⭐ Private Sunrise at Maya Bay — max 6 people
The only way to see Maya Bay empty. Departure 5:45 a.m., arrival 6:45 a.m. before the official opening. 30-45 minutes alone on the legendary beach. Small group (6 max), our French-speaking guide on board as photographer guide.
→ Book the Maya Bay sunrise small group
⭐ Longtail privatized for the day
You choose your itinerary with the captain: Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, Loh Lana, secret beaches known only to locals. Ultra-flexible format, max 8 people.
→ Book the private Koh Phi Phi longtail
⭐ Complete Speedboat Phi Phi Leh (private)
If you want to do the entire tour in one day and you are 6+ people, the private speedboat is more efficient than the longtail. Faster, more stable in rough seas, more spots covered.
→ Complete private speedboat tour
⭐ Fun diving for certified divers
Phi Phi is one of the best diving spots in southern Thailand. Visibility 20-30m from November to April. Reef sharks, leopard sharks, rays, pygmy seahorses.
Deserted beaches by speedboat
For those who want to ESCAPE Maya Bay: secret beach tour, calm Monkey Beach, Nui Bay, Chicken Island, Poda, Bamboo. Sunset and bioluminescent plankton at the end.

Maya Bay in 2026: what has changed
Maya Bay was closed 2018-2022 for ecological restoration. Since its reopening, the rules have tightened. In 2026:

- Quota of 300 simultaneous visitors in the bay
- Entry 400 THB per adult foreigner (paid cash on site)
- No anchorage in the bay — obligatory disembarkation by Loh Samah to the north
- Swimming allowed only in an area demarcated by buoys
- No mask + snorkel in the main bay (we snorkel in Pileh or Loh Samah)
📖 Everything is detailed in Maya Bay 2026 — complete guide.

Phi Phi vs Krabi vs Phuket: are you hesitating?
Three very different islands, marketed as similar. The real difference:
- Phi Phi = the most spectacular landscapes (limestone karsts, turquoise waters), small island, no roads, island life vibe
- Krabi (Ao Nang) = continental base, quieter, ideal for families, access to lots of islands
- Phuket = big island, infrastructure, nightlife, but more urban and crowded

Thailand typical itinerary with Phi Phi
If Phi Phi is on a broader trip, here is a tried and tested 7-day itinerary:
- Day 1: arrival Bangkok, night there
- Day 2: Bangkok (Grand Palace + Wat Pho + Chinatown evening)
- Day 3: flight Bangkok-Phuket in the morning, ferry to Phi Phi
- Days 4-6: Phi Phi (3 nights, see breakdown above)
- Day 7: return ferry, flight Phuket-Bangkok or Phuket-Europe

Why book directly with our team
Three concrete reasons:
- Correct prices without OTA surcharge. Klook, GetYourGuide, Viator add 20-30% to the local rate. By booking directly with us you pay the normal rate.
- You speak to someone on site, in French. Not a call center in Bangkok, not an AI robot that answers. Our team responds personally by WhatsApp within the day (generally < 1 hour).
- Total flexibility. Do you want to change the schedule the day before because the weather has changed? We manage. Do you want to add a step? We adapt. This is the difference between a package tour and a tailor-made trip.

Do you want to prepare for your trip?
The simplest: send a WhatsApp message to our team with your dates, the number of people, and your desires (calm/adventure/family/diving). You will receive a personalized response the same day, free and without obligation.
