3 nights minimum to enjoy peacefully. 2 nights if you are in a hurry (you will only see one end), 4-5 if you want to combine Phi Phi Don + Phi Phi Leh + a long excursion like Bamboo Island + relaxation. Less than 2 nights doesn't make sense: you spend more time on the ferry than in Phi Phi.
Quick response
3 nights is ideal. Here's why.
Phi Phi is actually two islands — Phi Phi Don (inhabited, hotels, bars) and Phi Phi Leh (uninhabited, Maya Bay). The two visit each other, but not on the same day or with the same logic.

Useful variations
As a couple honeymoon → 4 nights, Laem Tong side
The north of Phi Phi Don (Laem Tong, Loh Bagao) is far from the noise, private beach, 4-5 star resorts. We'll transfer you there by longtail from Tonsai. Downside: excursions from Tonsai so you move more.
With family → 4 nights, Loh Dalum side
Loh Dalum = calm bay, sandy beach, little swell, ideal for children. Do not sleep directly in Tonsai: nightclub noise until 2am.
Solo backpacker → 2-3 nights in Tonsai
Tonsai West = backpacker atmosphere, cheap hostels, social life, shared excursions, bars. Perfect solo.
Diving → 5-7 nights minimum
If you want to do your PADI Open Water (3-4 days) or several diving trips, count on it. Phi Phi is a great learning spot.
What we don't recommend
Take Maya Bay as a day trip from Phuket — you spend 4 hours on the ferry for 40 minutes on site, crowded, frustrating.
Sleep 1 night — useless, you can't see anything, you're exhausted.
Spread your Phi Phi stay into two parts — ferries + transfers make you lose 1 whole day each time.

Everything you want to know
Yes, but it's the most disappointing format: 2 hours of ferry on the way there, 2 hours on the way back, you only see Maya Bay in a breeze, no night on the island. We do not recommend it unless there is a strong constraint.
