Quick response
3 nights is ideal. Here's why.
Phi Phi is actually two islands — Phi Phi Don (inhabited, hotels, bars) and Phi Phi Leh (uninhabited, Maya Bay). The two visit each other, but not on the same day or with the same logic.
| Duration | What you see | What you miss |
|---|---|---|
| 1 night | Tonsai, a beach, a sunset | Maya Bay, Bamboo, Phi Phi Leh |
| 2 nights | Maya Bay in group, Tonsai | Bamboo Island, sunset plankton, Phi Phi Don north |
| 3 nights | All the essentials, serene pace | Scuba diving, long hikes |
| 4-5 nights | Diving, all the beaches, relaxation | Nothing |
| 7+ nights | Perfect for experiencing the island | A little long if you're not a diver |
Typical breakdown 3 nights
Day 1 — Arrival
- Ferry from Phuket (9 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.) or Krabi (9:30 a.m.)
- Hotel check-in, Tonsai Village walk, sunset aperitif on the beach
- Local restaurant dinner
Day 2 — The big piece
- Full day excursion: Maya Bay + Pileh + Viking Cave + Bamboo Island + Nui Bay
- Return 4-5 p.m., shower, Thai massage on the beach
- Seafood dinner + beach bar atmosphere
Day 3 — Tailor-made
- Option A: half-day snorkel Phi Phi Leh (short format)
- Option B: viewpoint sunrise (wake up at 5:30 a.m., panorama of the two bays)
- Option C: total relaxation + private sunset longtail + bioluminescent plankton
Day 4 morning — Departure
- Last swim Loh Dalum
- Return ferry 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. depending on next destination
Useful variations
As a couple honeymoon → 4 nights, Laem Tong side
The north of Phi Phi Don (Laem Tong, Loh Bagao) is far from the noise, private beach, 4-5 star resorts. We'll transfer you there by longtail from Tonsai. Downside: excursions from Tonsai so you move more.
With family → 4 nights, Loh Dalum side
Loh Dalum = calm bay, sandy beach, little swell, ideal for children. Do not sleep directly in Tonsai: nightclub noise until 2am.
Solo backpacker → 2-3 nights in Tonsai
Tonsai West = backpacker atmosphere, cheap hostels, social life, shared excursions, bars. Perfect solo.
Diving → 5-7 nights minimum
If you want to do your PADI Open Water (3-4 days) or several diving trips, count on it. Phi Phi is a great learning spot.
What we don't recommend
- Take Maya Bay as a day trip from Phuket — you spend 4 hours on the ferry for 40 minutes on site, crowded, frustrating.
- Sleep 1 night — useless, you can't see anything, you're exhausted.
- Spread your Phi Phi stay into two parts — ferries + transfers make you lose 1 whole day each time.
