We have lived on Koh Phi Phi since 2019 and the scenario repeats itself every day on the Tonsai pier: a solo traveler arrives a little stressed, drags his bag to the hostel... and six hours later he watches the sunset with three new friends.
Phi Phi is designed for solo travel, geographically: no cars, no roads, only one small pedestrian village. You meet the same faces at the hostel, at the sunset bar and on the boat the next day — impossible to stay alone for long. Between Koh Tao (divers), Koh Lanta (quiet couples) and Phi Phi, this is where you make friends the quickest.
Security: the reality on the ground
In general
One of the safest islands in the country. The village can be crossed on foot in 15 minutes, serious incidents are extremely rare. The only concrete risks: small thefts at the beach (never leave your phone on the towel while you swim, use the hostel lockers) and the difficult aftermath of Loh Dalum.
Solo woman
This is the question we get asked the most, so let's be specific: Phi Phi is much more serene than Bangkok or Phuket. No taxis, no isolated streets, the village calms down around 2 a.m., and the hostels offer female dormitories. The only real vigilance: your drink, in the evening — order yourself at the bar, refuse open buckets from strangers, go home with people from your hostel.
The Warning That Matters: Drugs
Loh Dalum's party scene involves propositions — grass, mushrooms, sometimes worse. Thai law is brutal and the police raid it. Refuses everything, even if “everyone does it”. No party is worth a Thai prison.
Hostels where you really meet people
- Party atmosphere (18-28 years old): social hostels around Tonsai — organized parties, rooftops, you won't sleep much
- Social but sleepable: addresses on the Loh Dalum side with shared swimming pool — the right balance
- Quiet (30+): guesthouses east of the village or towards Long Beach
Two tips that change everything: prefer dorms with 4-6 beds to dorms with 12 (this is where the real conversations start), and check the reviews from the last few weeks — hostel atmospheres change quickly from one season to the next.
Meeting people: instructions
- Day 1: arrive, put down your bag, go to the sunset on Loh Dalum. It's the social ritual of the island — everyone is there.
- Day 2: reserve the day Magic Day in speedboat (1,800 THB) — 8 hours with the same group, Maya Bay, Pileh, Bamboo Island, shared lunch: it's a friendship accelerator. The Pirate Ship plays the same role in a musical version.
- Day 3: viewpoint at daybreak with your meetings from the day before, swimming, and fire show evening.
No solo surcharge on group tours — you pay your way like everyone else. Only the privatized long-tail is paid by the boat (from 2,500 THB): solo, save it for a sunrise that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Add national park fees (400 THB) on the day of the big excursion, and ferry (~550 THB from Phuket, ~650 from Krabi).
Eating alone without the slightest discomfort
The Tonsai market (counters, skewers, pad thai at 80-120 THB) is the HQ for solos. Beach bars at sunset, communal tables at backpacker restaurants — no one eats “alone” for very long in Phi Phi. Just avoid romantic restaurants with candles, you'll be better off elsewhere.
Our final advice
3-4 nights, a social hostel in a small dormitory, the big excursion from day 2, and let the island do the rest.
