Read

Koh Ngai (also called Koh Hai) is a small, peaceful island in Trang, with no cars or roads, known for its clear water and a coral reef reachable straight off the beach — ideal for snorkeling without a boat. Quiet resort vibe, sunsets over the neighbouring islands (Koh Muk, Koh Kradan), zero nightlife. Reachable by speedboat from Koh Phi Phi (Tonsai), Koh Lanta and the Trang mainland. Perfect for couples and calm-lovers; pair it with Koh Muk and Koh Kradan.

The short answer

Koh Ngai (or Koh Hai) is a small, peaceful island in Trang, further south than Phi Phi and Lanta. Car-free and road-free, it's known for two things: exceptionally clear water and a coral reef reachable straight off the beach. It's one of the few islands in the region where you get excellent snorkeling without a boat, just wading in from the sand.

Who it's for

  • Ideal for: couples, snorkelers, lovers of absolute calm, travellers who want to switch off.
  • Not for: those after buzz, bars or nightlife — Koh Ngai moves at the pace of its few resorts.

What to do

  • Shore snorkeling — the coral is a few strokes from the sand, in clear water.
  • Snorkeling trips to nearby reefs and the other Trang islands.
  • Sunsets over the silhouettes of Koh Muk and Koh Kradan.
  • Doing nothing, genuinely: beach, hammock, disconnection.

How to get there

By speedboat from Koh Phi Phi (Tonsai, departures around 09:30-11:00), Koh Lanta, and the Trang mainland. A natural stop if you're heading south to wilder islands.

When to go

November to April: dry season, clearest water, best snorkeling. Like its Trang neighbours, Koh Ngai winds down May to October (resort closures) — check openings before booking off-season.

What to combine it with

The Trang trio: Koh Ngai + Koh Muk (Emerald Cave) + Koh Kradan, as a calm-islands circuit. You can then head up to Koh Lanta. Tell us how far south you want to go and our team will build the itinerary and transfers.

Everything you want to know

Yes, that's its big draw: the coral reef is reachable straight off the main beach, in very clear water — no boat needed to see fish and coral. It's one of the few islands in the region where shore snorkeling is genuinely good.
