Pileh Lagoon is a turquoise natural pool, surrounded by cliffs, on the island of Phi Phi Leh. You can swim there in calm, shallow water. To have peace of mind, leave early: the big boats arrive mid-morning.

Are you looking for the famous natural swimming pool of Phi Phi? This is the Pileh lagoon. A bay closed by high cliffs, filled with unreal turquoise water. We swim there in peace, far from the offshore swell.

Here, on the island, we go there almost every week. We know the right times and tips for keeping it quiet. We also show you how to chain it with Maya Bay, right next door.

What is Pileh Lagoon?

Pileh is hidden on the east coast of Phi Phi Leh, the small neighboring wild island. Vertical limestone walls enclose a shallow body of water. No sand, no beach: just a huge green and translucent swimming pool. Many call it the Phi Phi Natural Pool, and the nickname fits well. The decor is raw, sculpted by the sea and time.

Why is its water so calm

The cliffs cut off the wind and swell coming from the sea. The surface remains flat, perfect for floating or gently swimming. The color comes from the light background and the little depth. In good weather, you can see your feet without even putting on the mask. It is this contrast of dark cliffs and luminous water that makes the place magical.

When to go there to have it calm

The secret is in one word: early. The big boats from Phuket and Krabi arrive mid-morning. Before them, the lagoon is almost yours alone. The high season is from November to April: calm sea, clear water. From February to April, it is the driest. The water stays between 27 and 30°C all year round, so swimming is good all the time.

Swim in Pileh, and do a little snorkeling

Here you can swim, unlike Maya Bay beach. The shallow water reassures children and hesitant swimmers. On the rocky edges, a few fish pass close to the surface. Snorkeling remains modest: the attraction is mainly the swimming and the scenery. Keep your things dry on the boat and enjoy the moment.

Pileh and Maya Bay: the logical sequence

Both sites are on the same island, Phi Phi Leh. We therefore visit them immediately. At Maya Bay, you don’t swim from the beach. Boats dock at the Loh Samah pontoon, then a wooden passage leads to the sand. The tour lasts approximately one hour, with a limited number of visitors. A jump to Pileh to cool off afterwards is the perfect combo.

Price, national park and closure: what you need to know

Phi Phi Leh is a national park area. Entrance costs THB 400 per adult and THB 200 per child aged 3 to 14. It is free for children under 3 years old. You pay on arrival, and it is generally not included in the price of the tour. Good to know: Maya Bay closes every year from August 1 to September 30, to let the reef recover. If you are traveling during this period, write to us: we will adapt the itinerary.

Long-tail or speedboat: how to get there

The lagoon can only be visited by boat, from Phi Phi Don. The traditional long-tail is our favorite: slow, open, perfect for photos. The speedboat goes faster and covers more spots during the day. Koh Phi Phi has no airport or cars. You get there by ferry from Phuket, around 2 hours, or Krabi, around 1.5 hours.

Sunrise, our favorite time

Leaving at sunrise is true luxury here. The light skims the green of the water, and the lagoon is silent. Our morning departures target Maya Bay first, then Pileh immediately. You come home for lunch, when the crowds are just starting. This is the best way to beat the mainland boats.

Our island tips for a great morning

Leave early, really early: that's the only rule that matters. Bring reef-friendly sunscreen and a water bottle. Store your phone in a waterproof pouch. Keep your device charged: this morning light is not to be missed. We have been based on the island since 2019, rated 4.93/5 on Google. Ask us for the best time slot depending on today's weather, and take a look at our excursions.

Everything you want to know

Yes, and that’s even one of its great assets. The water is calm and shallow, perfect for swimming. Unlike Maya Bay beach, swimming is possible there.
