Phuket: what you need to know before going there
Phuket is huge (540 km²) and very uneven. Patong is the archetype of poorly managed mass tourism (Bangla Road = aggressive nightlife). But Phuket also has absolutely quiet corners — you just have to choose the right side.
Phuket mainly serves as a base for real excursions: Phi Phi, James Bond, Similan, Khao Phra Thaeo (jungle). It is also the hub for international flights (Phuket Airport HKT).

Typical itinerary 4 nights
Day 1 — Arrival + Big Buddha
- Direct flight from Bangkok (1h20) or Europe (12h)
- Hotel check-in on the west coast (Kata or Nai Harn recommended)
- Afternoon: Big Buddha + Wat Chalong (half day, easy)
Day 2 — James Bond Island by canoe
THE signature day of Phuket. Speedboat from Bang Tao or Ao Po pier, navigation between the karsts of Phang Nga bay, sea-canoe IN the limestone caves (low passages, swimming in hidden "rooms"), stop on James Bond beach, local lunch on Koh Panyee (Muslim village on stilts).
Two formats:
- Standard speedboat (group ~20 people): ~3500 THB/pers, day
- Premium catamaran: fewer people, more comfort, BBQ on board, sunset return: ~5500 THB/pers

Day 3 — Phi Phi day-trip (or better: 2 nights on Phi Phi)
If you can add 2 nights to Phi Phi → do it. The difference is enormous: Maya Bay at empty sunrise, deserted beaches in the evening, island atmosphere. French-speaking guide Koh Phi Phi.
If you stay based in Phuket:
- Speedboat day-trip Phi Phi: 1 hour navigation, Maya Bay + Bamboo Island + Pileh + Monkey Beach, return 5 p.m.

Day 4 — Variations
Option A: Similan Islands (October-May only) Top 10 in the world for diving and snorkeling. 9 islands, ultra-clear waters, whale sharks frequent (Oct-Feb). Long day (departure 7 a.m., return 5 p.m.).
Option B: Ethical elephant sanctuary Refuge without elephant rides, without shows. You feed, you observe, you walk with them. Half day.
Option C: Coral & Racha Islands by speedboat or catamaran Snorkeling on coral reef, quiet beaches, lunch on the island. Half-day or full-day format.

When to come to Phuket
- November - March: high season, dry, calm sea. Price +30-40%.
- April - May: very hot, still nice, standard prices.
- June - October: monsoon, brief showers, prices -30%. Similan CLOSED from April to October.
The trap: avoiding scooter scams
Phuket has a reputation for scooter accidents (especially Patong). If you rent: helmet required, drive on the right (reverse direction Europe), insurance checked, photos of the scooter before rental (fictitious scratch scams). Otherwise: Grab, tuk-tuks, privatized taxis.
