Read

Koh Yao (Yai and Noi) are two calm islands right in the heart of Phang Nga Bay, between Phuket and Krabi — still authentic, with Muslim fishing villages, rice paddies, rubber plantations and quiet beaches. You come for real local life, cycling, kayaking the mangroves, and easy access to the Phang Nga limestone islands (including James Bond Island). Reachable by speedboat from Phuket, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi. Perfect for couples and crowd-avoiders — not for partygoers.

The short answer

Koh Yao is island Thailand from before mass tourism — minutes by boat from the busiest sites. Two islands in the heart of Phang Nga Bay, between Phuket and Krabi: Koh Yao Noi (the small one, gentle tourism and couples) and Koh Yao Yai (the big one, more rural and quiet). Muslim fishing villages, rice paddies, rubber plantations, calm beaches. You come to breathe and for easy access to the Phang Nga limestone islands.

Who it's for

  • Ideal for: couples, authenticity-seekers, cyclists, calm-lovers.
  • Not for: partygoers or beach-club seekers — little nightlife, local culture to respect (modest dress appreciated, Muslim-majority island).

What to do

  • Cycling / scootering between rice paddies and rubber plantations.
  • Kayaking the mangroves, quiet beaches, sunsets.
  • Local fishing at sunset — see our Koh Yao fishing trip.
  • Phang Nga islands (including James Bond Island): often less crowded departing from Koh Yao than from Phuket.

How to get there

By speedboat from Phuket (Bang Rong pier), Krabi, and Koh Phi Phi. Its central position in the bay makes it an excellent base to explore Phang Nga without staying in the tourist zones of Phuket or Ao Nang.

How many nights

2-3 nights suit most: cycling the island, kayaking, a Phang Nga trip, and beach time. Tell us what you're after and our team will arrange the transfer and trips. To weigh it against the other islands, see the regional comparison.

Everything you want to know

Koh Yao Noi (the small one) is more developed for gentle tourism: a few charming resorts, a peaceful setting, popular with couples. Koh Yao Yai (the big one) is larger, more rural and even quieter, with long roads between villages and beaches. Both share the same authentic, Muslim-majority vibe — discretion and respect for local customs are appreciated.
