Khao Sok and Cheow Lan Lake: combining jungle and islands (planning guide)

Read

Yes, if you love nature: Khao Sok is one of the world's oldest rainforests, with Cheow Lan Lake and its limestone peaks rising from emerald water — floating raft-house stays, kayaking, treks, wildlife (gibbons, hornbills, monkeys). It's the perfect jungle counterpoint to a beach trip. Budget 2 nights (one on the lake). Reachable from Surat Thani (~1h30-2h), Khao Lak, or by transfer from Krabi/Phuket. Slot it at the start or end of an island itinerary. Dry season (Dec-April) is more comfortable; monsoon is greener but wetter.

The short answer

Khao Sok is the perfect jungle counterpoint to a beach trip: one of the world's oldest rainforests, dominated by Cheow Lan Lake (Ratchaprapha Dam) — limestone peaks rising from emerald water, floating raft houses, kayaking, treks, and real wildlife (gibbons, hornbills, macaques). Nothing like the beach postcard: this is raw nature.

Note: Khao Sok isn't an island we serve by boat — this guide helps you plan it and fit it around your island trip.

What to do

  • Cheow Lan Lake — the must-do: a night in a floating raft house, longtail between the peaks, kayaking, swimming. The "Guilin of Thailand".
  • Rainforest trek, waterfalls, caves.
  • Wildlife watching — early morning or dusk.

How to combine it with the islands

It's a start-or-end add-on. Typical route: a few days in the islands (Phi Phi, Krabi) then 2 nights at Khao Sok, or the reverse.

FromTransfer time
Surat Thani~1h30-2h
Khao Lak~1h30
Krabi / Phuket~3-4h

Bonus: via Surat Thani you can continue to Koh Samui / Koh Tao on the Gulf side.

Package or book separately?

Lake nights are often booked as a package (transfer + longtail + meals + activities) — simpler. Separately can be cheaper but you handle the transfer to Cheow Lan pier and the lodge pick-up time (often around 11am). Check the times before splitting it all up.

When to go

  • Dry season (Dec-April) — more comfortable, wildlife near water.
  • Monsoon (May-Oct) — lush forest, full waterfalls, fewer people, but wet, muddy treks and leeches. The lake stays gorgeous by boat (see Koh Phi Phi month by month for the region's seasonal logic).

How many nights

2 nights is ideal (one in the village, one on the lake). One if you only do the lake, but a lot of transfer for little time there.

We help you slot it in

We don't operate Khao Sok, but we know the region and regularly arrange jungle + island trips for our clients. Tell us your itinerary and our team will show you how to fit Khao Sok in cleanly (order, transfers, number of nights) — see also in what order to do the islands.

Everything you want to know

The highlight is Cheow Lan Lake (Ratchaprapha Dam): limestone peaks rise from emerald water, with floating raft-house stays, kayaking, swimming and longtail trips. In the park you trek the rainforest, watch wildlife (gibbons, hornbills, macaques) and visit caves and waterfalls. Raw nature, not beach.
