How Many Days in Koh Phi Phi? Why 3 Nights Is Ideal
Read
3 nights minimum to enjoy peacefully. 2 nights if you are in a hurry (you will only see one end), 4-5 if you want to combine Phi Phi Don + Phi Phi Leh + a long excursion like Bamboo Island + relaxation. Less than 2 nights doesn't make sense: you spend more time on the ferry than in Phi Phi.
Quick response
3 nights is ideal. Here's why.
Phi Phi is actually two islands, Phi Phi Don (inhabited, hotels, bars) and Phi Phi Leh (uninhabited, Maya Bay). The two visit each other, but not on the same day or with the same logic.

Useful variations
As a couple honeymoon → 4 nights, Laem Tong side
The north of Phi Phi Don (Laem Tong, Loh Bagao) is far from the noise, private beach, 4-5 star resorts. We'll transfer you there by longtail from Tonsai. Downside: excursions from Tonsai so you move more.
With family → 4 nights, Loh Dalum side
Loh Dalum = calm bay, sandy beach, little swell, ideal for children. Do not sleep directly in Tonsai: nightclub noise until 2am.
Solo backpacker → 2-3 nights in Tonsai
Tonsai West = backpacker atmosphere, cheap hostels, social life, shared excursions, bars. Perfect solo.
Diving → 5-7 nights minimum
If you want to do your PADI Open Water (3-4 days) or several diving trips, count on it. Phi Phi is a great learning spot, and a discovery scuba dive is the easiest first step.
What we don't recommend
Take Maya Bay as a day trip from Phuket, you spend 4 hours on the ferry for 40 minutes on site, crowded, frustrating.
Sleep 1 night, useless, you can't see anything, you're exhausted.
Spread your Phi Phi stay into two parts, ferries + transfers make you lose 1 whole day each time.

Everything you want to know
Yes, but it's the most disappointing format: about 2h20 of ferry on the way there, 2h20 on the way back, you only see Maya Bay in a breeze, no night on the island. We do not recommend it unless there is a strong constraint.
Yes for the majority. Day 1 arrival and discovery of Tonsai. Day 2 full day excursion (Maya Bay + Bamboo). Day 3 Phi Phi Leh or plankton sunset. Day 4 free morning then return ferry.
4 nights better: cooler pace, 1 more day of relaxation, less fatigue. Prefer a hotel in Loh Dalum (main beach) rather than Tonsai (club noise until 2am).
3-4 nights in a resort in Laem Tong (north-east of Phi Phi Don). More expensive but isolated, ideal honeymoon.
For 10 nights across the region: about 4 in Krabi, 2 on Phi Phi, 4 on Koh Lanta is an excellent split. Two nights on Phi Phi is enough for most, it unlocks a Maya Bay sunrise nearly alone, which a day trip can't. Do them in that order and finish on Lanta (road-connected to Krabi airport) so no crossing gambles your flight.
Yes, for shorter trips. Under 6 nights, base in Krabi and add 2-3 nights on Phi Phi rather than chasing three islands, you lose half-days to every transfer. Multi-island hopping earns its place from 8-9 nights, when you actually have time to settle in each.
