Longtail or speedboat at Koh Phi Phi: which to choose (and at what price)?

Longtail or speedboat at Koh Phi Phi: which to choose (and at what price)?

Read

It depends where you start. On Koh Phi Phi itself, a private traditional longtail is perfect for exploring Phi Phi Leh (Maya Bay, Pileh, Bamboo) at your own pace: authentic, calm, and affordable (2,500 THB for 2h, whole boat, up to 8 people). A speedboat is needed whenever there's distance or swell — and from Phuket, it's speedboat only (too far for a longtail). Simple rule: longtail to linger around Phi Phi, speedboat to cover distance fast.

The short answer

The right choice comes down to one thing: how much distance you need to cover.

  • Traditional longtail — the wooden boat with the long-shaft engine, icon of the Andaman. Perfect on site, around Koh Phi Phi: coastal, calm, authentic, and the best price/freedom ratio for exploring Phi Phi Leh (Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Loh Samah, Bamboo Island) at your own pace.
  • Speedboat — fast, covered, stable, built for distance and swell. Essential whenever you must cross (Phuket, Krabi) or chain several far-apart sites in a day.

From Phuket, there's no debate: speedboat (or ferry) only. A longtail has neither the range nor the sea-handling for that crossing. The longtail is for once you've arrived on Phi Phi.

The boarding rule, simply

  1. You're already on Koh Phi Phi and want to explore Phi Phi Lehprivate longtail. You set the route, stop where you like, and dodge the crowded big-boat slots. From 2,500 THB for 2h for the whole boat (up to 8 people).
  2. You start from Krabi or Ao Nang → ferry or speedboat depending on budget and sea (see how to reach Phi Phi).
  3. You start from Phuketspeedboat or ferry, never a longtail: too far, too exposed.
  4. Rough seas (July-September) → speedboat slipping between squalls, or a longtail confined to the sheltered side in the morning.

The smart itinerary: both

The best of both worlds, and what we arrange most often: speedboat for distance, longtail for exploration. You arrive fast from the mainland, then switch to a private longtail once on site to experience Phi Phi Leh away from the crush — that's where the magic happens, especially at the Maya Bay sunrise.

To cover maximum sites in one day from the mainland, the full speedboat tour is unbeatable for efficiency.

Bottom line

Longtail = linger around Phi Phi, authentic and affordable. Speedboat = cover distance, fast and in all weather. Tell us your departure point and what you want to see, our team will steer you to the right boat — and the right time slot.

Everything you want to know

Yes, and it's the ideal itinerary: speedboat to cover the distance from Phuket or Krabi, then a private longtail once on Phi Phi to explore Phi Phi Leh (Maya Bay, Pileh, Loh Samah, Bamboo) quietly, away from the big-boat crowds. It's exactly what we arrange for most clients.
