From Phuket, there's no debate: speedboat (or ferry) only. A longtail has neither the range nor the sea-handling for that crossing. The longtail is for once you've arrived on Phi Phi.

The boarding rule, simply
- You're already on Koh Phi Phi and want to explore Phi Phi Leh → private longtail. You set the route, stop where you like, and dodge the crowded big-boat slots. From 2,500 THB for 2h for the whole boat (up to 8 people).
- You start from Krabi or Ao Nang → ferry or speedboat depending on budget and sea (see how to reach Phi Phi).
- You start from Phuket → speedboat or ferry, never a longtail: too far, too exposed.
- Rough seas (July-September) → speedboat slipping between squalls, or a longtail confined to the sheltered side in the morning.
