Ayutthaya, capital of Siam (1350-1767)

Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam for 417 years - at its peak in the 17th century, one of the largest cities in the world (1 million inhabitants), trading with China, Persia, France, the Netherlands. The Burmese army completely razed it in 1767. UNESCO since 1991.

Our 4 temples of the tour

  • Wat Prasrisanphet — 3 chedis in a row, royal temple from the 15th century.
  • Wat Mahathat — the head of Buddha in the tree (mythical photo).
  • Wat Lokayasutharam — the giant reclining Buddha.
  • Wat Chai Watthanaram — the most photogenic Angkor-style ruins.

Our advice

  • Take a cushion for the road (1h30 in the van, sometimes more on the way back).
  • Sunscreen + hat + water — open-air temples, little shade.
  • Easy shoes to take off/put back on (bare feet in buildings).

Tip: if you are hesitating between an English-speaking group and a French-speaking private group: for a difference of 5,880 THB (for 2 people), the French-speaking private group gives 2 more temples, flexibility, and saves you the return to MBK. Worth it if you don't speak English.

    Wat Prasrisanphet

    Royal temple with 3 large chedis (stupas) in a row — Ayutthaya's equivalent of Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaew. Formerly housed the ashes of the kings of Siam.

    Wat Mahathat

    Spiritual center of the ancient capital. THE photo of Ayutthaya: the head of Buddha entwined in the roots of a banyan tree since the Burmese sack of 1767.

    Wat Lokkayasutharam

    Giant outdoor reclining Buddha, 37 m long, draped in saffron fabric. Inspired the setting of the game Street Fighter.

    Wat Chai Watthanaram

    Angkor Wat style ruins, built in 1630-1650 by King Prasat Thong. The most photogenic temple in Ayutthaya.
