Things to Do in Phuket: Our Honest Shortlist, Land and Sea

Ler

Phuket does a few things very well: sea trips, Old Phuket Town and the west coast beaches at Kata, Karon and Patong. Spend your boat days on Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi, Coral Island and Racha, the Khai islands or the Similans in season, and keep the island days for the Old Town and the beach. From May to October, plan fewer boat days because rough seas can cancel tours.

Phuket gets sold as a giant beach resort. It is more useful to think of it as a base. It is Thailand's largest island, linked to the mainland by a bridge, with an international airport and boats leaving for some of the best water in the Andaman Sea.

Our team lives on Koh Phi Phi, not in Phuket. We plan trips there and work with local guides we book directly. This list comes from what our travellers tell us when they get back: which days were worth it, which were filler, and which only work in the right season.

Things to do in Phuket: the short answer

Phuket is at its best on the water, in Old Phuket Town and on the west coast beaches. Build your shortlist around those and you will not waste days.

Phare de Phuket (Laem Phromthep)
  • Best on the island: a slow day in Old Phuket Town, a calm beach day at Kata or Karon, a night out in Patong if that is your scene.
  • Best off the island: Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, Phi Phi, Coral Island and Racha, the Khai islands, and the Similan Islands in season.
  • Season matters: from November to April the sea is calm and clear. From May to October, some days are too rough to sail.

Our rule of thumb: in high season, give the sea more days than the land. In the monsoon, flip it, and keep your boat days flexible.

Old Phuket Town: the best day without a beach

The part of Phuket we push hardest has no sand at all. Old Phuket Town is a grid of Sino-Portuguese shophouses: painted facades, shuttered windows, shaded walkways along the street.

Phare de Phuket (Laem Phromthep)

Go on foot. Wander the old streets, look up at the facades, stop to eat wherever the locals are queuing. Early morning or late afternoon is more pleasant than the middle of the day.

It is also our favourite plan B. When the monsoon cancels a boat, the Old Town still works in the rain. It is not for you if you only came for the beach, but most travellers who give it a day are glad they did.

West coast beaches: Patong, Kata and Karon

Patong is the busiest beach on the island and the centre of the nightlife. Come here if you want noise, crowds and late nights. It is not for families looking for quiet, or couples hoping for a peaceful sunset.

Kata and Karon are calmer. They suit families, couples and anyone who wants a proper beach day without the Patong energy. If you are choosing where to sleep and you are not here to party, we usually point people this way.

A safety note we repeat every year: during the monsoon, the west coast beaches get big waves. A red flag on the beach means no swimming. Take it seriously, even if the water looks fine from your towel.

The quieter north

The north of Phuket, near the airport, is the calm side of the island. Fewer crowds, a slower pace, less going on in the evening.

It makes sense for travellers who want rest more than activity, and for a last night before an early flight. It does not suit you if you want to walk out of your hotel into restaurants and nightlife: you will spend more time in taxis.

Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

If you only have room for a single boat trip from Phuket, this is usually our pick. Phang Nga Bay is a maze of limestone islands rising straight out of the water, with James Bond Island as its famous landmark.

Phare de Phuket (Laem Phromthep)

The famous island is busy. What our travellers remember most is the time spent among the smaller islands and caves. That is why we like doing it by sea canoe: James Bond Island by sea canoe gets you close to the rock instead of just looking at it from a deck.

It suits families, couples and first-timers. It is not for you if you want long hours of snorkeling: this is a scenery day, not a reef day.

Phi Phi from Phuket: our home, honestly

Phi Phi is where our team lives, so we will be straight with you. A day trip shows you the islands from the water. Staying a night shows you Phi Phi after the day boats leave, which is a very different place.

If you only have a day, the Phi Phi speedboat day trip is the easiest way to see it. A speedboat takes about 1 hour, the ferry about 2 hours.

A few facts to know:

  • Maya Bay is closed every year from 1 August to 30 September for reef recovery, and reopens on 1 October.
  • Boats dock at Loh Samah Bay and you walk in on a boardwalk. Swimming is allowed only inside a buoyed zone, without mask or fins.
  • There is a national park fee paid in cash. Whether it is included depends on the tour: check the tour page.

Staying over? Our sources give the last boats back to Phuket at 15:30 for the ferry and 16:00 for the speedboat, but schedules change with the season, so check the transfer page.

Coral Island, Racha and the Khai islands: the easy sea days

Not every boat day has to be a big expedition. Coral Island, Racha and the Khai islands are the gentler options: a short boat ride, clear water, sand and snorkeling.

Phare de Phuket (Laem Phromthep)

These are the trips we suggest for young children, for nervous swimmers and for anyone who gets seasick easily. Coral and Racha islands is a good first sea day before you commit to a longer one.

The Khai islands are small and pretty. Ask us about them if you want a light, relaxed day on the water.

The Similan Islands: worth it, but only in season

The Similan Islands are the trip people talk about for years. The national park is open each year from mid-October to mid-May. Outside those months it is closed, and no amount of wishing changes that.

Phare de Phuket (Laem Phromthep)

It is a trip across open sea. It suits strong swimmers and anyone serious about snorkeling. It is not the day for travellers who struggle with seasickness or very young children.

If your dates fall in season, put the Similan Islands snorkeling trip near the top of your list, check the tour page for timings, and book it early in your stay, so a bad-weather day still leaves you room to reschedule.

Diving and the elephant sanctuary

Never dived? Discover scuba diving in Phuket is a first, gentle taste of diving for beginners. Check the tour page for what is included and who can join. The sea water is 27 to 30 °C all year, so you will not be cold. If you are not comfortable in water, start with a snorkeling day instead.

For the elephant sanctuary, we keep it simple. How the sanctuary works with its elephants is described on the tour page, and we do not add claims beyond what it says. Read it and decide whether it fits your values.

What we would skip, and how to split your days

The filler we see most often: whole days on a Patong sunbed, long afternoons in shopping malls you could find at home, and roadside animal photo stops. None of it is terrible. It is just not why Phuket is worth the flight.

How to split your days:

  • November to April: most days on the water, with Old Phuket Town and a beach day in between to rest. February to April is the driest.
  • May to October: rain usually comes as short squalls, not all-day rain, but some days the sea is rough. Book boat days flexibly and keep the Old Town as your backup.
  • Mid-April: Songkran runs from 13 to 15 April. Expect to get wet anywhere in town.

Practical points: our tours can be booked online until 18:00 Bangkok time the day before, and transfers need 48 hours notice. If we cancel because of weather, you get a 100% refund or a free change of date.

Tudo o que quer saber

For most travellers, a boat trip to Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island. If you can only spare a land day, make it Old Phuket Town.
Patong if you want nightlife and crowds. Kata and Karon if you want calmer beaches, especially with children or as a couple.
Yes, by speedboat it takes about 1 hour each way. A day trip shows you the highlights from the water, but staying a night lets you see Phi Phi once the day boats have left.
Only while the national park is open, from mid-October to mid-May each year. Outside that window, choose Phang Nga Bay or Coral Island and Racha instead.
Some days, yes. From May to October the sea can be rough and boat tours can be cancelled. If we cancel for weather, you get a full refund or a free change of date.
Only when it is safe. The west coast gets big waves in the monsoon, and a red flag on the beach means no swimming.
Head to Old Phuket Town and walk its Sino-Portuguese shophouse streets. Rain usually comes in short squalls, so you can duck under a covered walkway and carry on.
Yes, there is a discover scuba diving trip made for beginners: the tour page explains who can join and what is included. If you are not comfortable in water, a snorkeling day is a gentler start.
